Some of the bigger companies that hire IT graduates in Ireland run structured 12-24 month graduate programmes. Each company has their own way of doing things. Some companies will appoint a mentor/supervisor to a small group of graduates, others will run formal training classes and some companies rotate graduates around different IT functions within the company. What they all have in company is the opportunity to combine paid work with training, mentoring and support while gaining experience in a professional IT company. This is a great way to bridge the gap between college and work life, between working on FYP-scale projects to enterprise scale development, and between theory and practice.
One of the most frustrating things for IT graduates applying for jobs is to hear that they don’t have enough relevant experience. These graduate programmes give you a great opportunity to gain relevant commercial experience, while receiving support and training.
Applications for these programmes often close in Feb, March and April so while you’re busy with Final Year Projects and exams, it’s important to be aware of these programmes and not to miss their deadlines.
