Summary of Immigration Stamps in Ireland

If you are an IT professional from outside the EEA and are interested in working in an IT role in Ireland you may need to apply for an immigration stamp or visa. Here are the four main types of immigration stamp issued:

Stamp 1

Issued to those on work permits, green card permits, spouse dependent work permits, business permission. This person is permitted to remain in Ireland on conditions that the holder does not enter employment unless the employer has obtained a permit, does not engage in any business or profession without the permission of the Minister for Justice and Equality and does not remain later than a specified date.

  • Non-EEA national issued with a work permit
  • Non-EEA national issued a Green Card Permit
  • Non-EEA national who have been granted permission to operate a business in the State
  • Working Holiday Authorisation holder

Stamp 1A

Issued to accountancy students for the purpose of fulltime training. This person is permitted to remain in Ireland for the purpose of full time training with a named body until a specified date.

Other employment is not allowed.

  • Non-EEA national studying accountancy

Stamp 2

Issued to students registered on a full time course in an institution recognised by the Department of Education and Science. Students can work 20 hours/week during the term and full time hours during holiday periods. This person is permitted to remain in Ireland to pursue a course of studies on condition that the holder does not engage in any business or profession other than casual employment (defined as 20 hours per week during school term and up to 40 hours per week during school holidays) and does not remain later than a specified date. Also the person has no recourse to public funds unless otherwise provided.

  •  Non-EEA national attending a full time course of study

Stamp 2A

Issued to students who are attending a course not recognised by the Department of Education. Students are not entitled to work. This person is permitted to remain in Ireland to pursue a course of studies on condition that the holder does not enter employment, does not engage in any business or profession, has no recourse to public funds and does not remain later than a specified date.

  •  Non-EEA national attending course of study not recognised by the Department of Education and Science.

Stamp 3

Issued to a non-EEA spouse or dependent of an employment permit holder, a non-EEA visitor, a non-EEA retired person of independent means, a non-EEA Minister of Religion and Member of Religious Order. This person is permitted to remain in Ireland on conditions that the holder does not enter employment, does not engage in any business or profession and does not remain later than a specified date.

  • Non-EEA visitor
  • Non-EEA retired person of independent means
  • Non-EEA Minister of Religion and Member of Religious Order
  • Non-EEA spouse/dependant of employment permit holder

Stamp 4

Issued to a non-EEA family member of an EEA national, a non-EEA spouse/partner of an Irish national, a refugee, a programme refugee, a person granted family reunification under the Refugee Act, 1996 (as amended). This person is permitted to remain in Ireland until a specified date.

Stamp 4EU FAM

Issued to the non-EEA national family member of an EU national where the family member qualifies under the European Communities (Free Movement of Persons) Regulations 2006. See www.inis.gov.ie. This person is permitted to remain in Ireland until a specified date.

Note: Those on work authorisation/working visas were issued with Stamp 4 but this scheme has now been replaced with the Green Card Permit scheme.
